Søren Dahlgaard has for the last 5 years worked with his Dough Warrior painting character, through which he debates painting techniques, the history of painting and the struggle to make a master piece. When the painting battle begins the Warriors slapstick actions are not without humour and self-irony but the comments and references to the history of art and life in general is seriously intriguing and entertaining.
The exhibition A Hedge is a Lance presents 3 series of works: First the series of paintings from the
Hedge Warrior performance at Øregaard Museum from last month. This time Søren Dahlgaard was dressed in an outfit made from hedges and grass and he ran towards the large canvasses - as some kind of suburban knight - with a hedge instead of a lance in his hand and this was his paintbrush.
The second work is the photo-series of the
Landscape painting performance at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk from 2008, and is shown for the first time in Copenhagen.
The third work is the
portrait painting photo series – also by the Dough Warrior character (2007-2011), which has been produced at live performances in Brazil, Poland, China, Iceland & USA.
Søren Dahlgaard is educated at Slade School of Arts London. He has exhibited at the National Art Gallery Denmark, PS1 MoMA NYC, Singapore Biennale and many other institutions.
