I 2001 Nicolai Howalt released his first book "3x1" - a photographic essay describing the life of a family living in a suburb to Århus, Denmark.

3x1 has been exhibited e.g. in Galerie Asbæk Underground (2001), Aarhus Kunstmuseum (2003), Ifsak Istanbul (2003).
